Esk Buttress Classic

With the amazing sunny weather continuing we took full advantage, hitched a ride with Max, Blue and his son Lewis, and headed up Eskdale to the superb Esk Buttress.
It’s a great walk-in from Cockley Beck up Mosedale to reach Eskdale and the Great Moss, even if it’s a bit mossy in places! How many other places feel so wilderness-like and completely out of sight of roads and cars?

Esk Buttress is a place we keep going back to, but this time we picked two awesome routes we hadn’t done before; Black Sunday (HVS) so named as it was a consolation prize for the first ascensionists who had meant to climb Central Pillar (E2), which was our second route (picture above).
Central Pillar has got three mega pitches, a delicate slab, an unprotected groove, and a ultra steep and juggy finish. All of them justify the three stars!
