Bar Pot

The plan for the weekend involved three choices for the Saturday. We (Rach and Colin) ended up taking the second choice which was Bar Pot, one of the simpler entrances into the Gaping Gill system. After a quick walk up to the entrance we dropped down pitch one (the photo is Rach half way down), down the greasy slab and onto the start of the second pitch. Rach rigged the traverse line and the pitch head and abseiled down first – her first bit of rigging.

At the foot of the pitch we dumped our SRT kits and followed the rift to SE Pot where we started the crawls to Main Chamber. All three waterfalls were flowing making for an impressive view. We spent some time looking at the various passages that lead off from the chamber and ended with a visit to Mud Hall. On the way out Rach de-rigged.

After the trip we had a look at the guide book and considered some possible future trips in the GG system.

  1. I think whoever gets to the entrance first gets to rig 😆 . We could use Dihedral as a route in to look at the Whitsun series which goes off the other end of Mud Hall beyond the point where Mud Hensler’s comes in. Reportedly there are some good formations and big stomping passage, plus I’ve never been there…
