Wild Boars and chilly winds

My father had long wanted to walk up Wild Boar Fell just south of Kirkby Stephen.

Being an active walker some 20 years or so ago and completing many of the UK’s long distance walks (Pennine Way, Coast to Coast etc.), Wild Boar was missed out on many of his walks.

Wild Boar Fell is currently not included in any long distance footpaths (however it is near the new/alternative Pennine Bridleway being constructed).

So, to put matters straight we had a lovely walk up to the summit in the low sun and chilly wind that was swirling around us. We walked from Stennerskeugh along the prepared section of the Pennine Bridleway (nicely stoned and now grassing over) over Scandal Beck (there are caves up there somewhere) and up to High Dolphinsty. There a short but steeper section leads to the Nab which gives fine views along Mallerstang. A circuit of the summit plateau and visiting the trig point to say we had been there.

After the walk we popped in to see Pendragon Castle a 12th Century castle before heading home for a well earned cup of tea.

Great!!!
