The World Conservation Union, or International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Red List of Threatened Species is the world’s most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of plant and animal species.
The IUCN is the world’s main authority on the conservation status of species.
Species are classified in to nine categories – which are set through criteria such as rate of decline, population size, area of geographic distribution, and degree of population and distribution fragmentation.
The categories are…
- Extinct (EX)
- Extinct in the Wild (EW)
The term Threatened is a grouping of the three categories…
- Critically Endangered (CR)
- Endangered (EN)
- Vulnerable (VU)
Lower risk categories (which used to [1994] also include a Conservation Dependant (CD) category) are…
- Near Threatened (NT)
- Least Concern (LC)
And these additional categories for species not yet categorised…
- Data Deficient (DD)
- Not Evaluated (NE)
Cats and dogs could be EW and mice and birds would then be VU.
Clearly we have to save cats and dogs but be less concerned with mice and birds 😆
Perhaps we ought to stop driving cars. I’ve seen 2 dead badgers (in the space of 2 days) on the A685 between Tebay and Kirkby Stephen, as well as numerous dead birds (could these be just pheasants, or are they birds of prey catching mice or other creatures that have strayed onto the road?).
Never mind, all the badgers will be extinct if the Government get their way. Unless they realise that vaccines exist for Bovine TB. Perhaps someone should tell them.
Closer to home, my poor little sparrows in the front garden are threatened almost every week by the routine flypast of a Sparrowhawk. It tours all the gardens on the look out for those lovely little birds that are normally protected by my cat scarer.
Can we have some new categories? How about:
LT. Legitimate Target (Possums in New Zealand, Cane Toads in Australia, Grey Squirrels here?, …)
PN. Public Nuisance (anyone’s pet cats and dogs except your own)
DO. Dangerously overpopulated. (Human beings?) 😈

They are notoriousley viscious birds, and lately have been known to carry machetes and knives. i put it down to bad parenting and a failure of the government to address the problem early on.
Could we issue all badgers with high viz jackets, glasses and teach them the green cross code?? I don’t want one of the dozy buggers denting my car!! 😆

Denmark should hang it’s head in shame! The sea is stained in red, but it has nothing to do with the effects of climate change on nature….
It’s because of the cruelty that the human beings (civilised human) inflict, as they kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins!!?
This happens every year in Faroe Island in Denmark . In this slaughter the main participants are young teens. WHY? To show that they are adults and mature !!! …. BULLLLsh?
In this big celebration, nothing is missing for the fun. Everyone is participating in one way or the other, killing or looking at the cruelty “supporting like a spectatorâ€
Is it necessary to mention that the dolphin Calderon, like all the other species of dolphins, are near instinction and they get near men to play and interact. In a way of PURE friendship… ?
They don’t die instantly, they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hocks. And at that time the dolphins produce a grim cry, extremely compatible with the cry of a new born child!?
But they suffer in a way that can only be described as ‘torture’ and there’s no compassion till these sweet beings slowly die in thier own blood…
