Plodding around Pembrokeshire

The long weekend saw Richard and I in Pembrokeshire. Having far too much on, we only got away on Saturday (just. We had to head back home to do something, just as we got out of B’ham). Although Saturday was a short day, we managed a stroll around Strumble Head (near Fishguard) and saw some seals playing in the sea. After, we found a lovely campsite in Trefin, a small village which also had a local pub which fed us tea.

We got up early on Saturday morning and jumped on the bus which took us back out to Strumble Head. We then spent the next 4 and a half hours running back (28 km), partly inland and then on the coast. In the morning, the weather was atroscious and we ran in full waterproofs, however in the afternoon the sun came out and it was beautiful. The Pembrokeshire coastline really is a hidden gem. In the afternoon we went to Porthgain, this small village used to be a quarry port and has lots of industrial heritage, which is almost pretty. They tunnelled through a headland to allow the quarry materials to be transported safely to the harbour and the resulting structure (which is inaccessible) is quite amazing. I think most people would not even notice it was there as it is only seen from the bottom of a grassy slope near the edge of the cliffs.

Seeing as we had enjoyed running on Saturday so much, on Sunday we got the bus to St Davids and then again ran back via a few Neolithic tombs and burial chambers (24 ish km). Again a lovely run, but we could only really enjoy the flowers on this one as the fog was so thick! Nevertheless we had a wonderful cup of hot chocolate mid-way in Abereiddy.

A lovely weekend, partly in aid of training Richard for the LAMM (I am yet to find a partner 🙁 boooo!)

  1. If only it wasn’t such a long drive to get to Pembroke!

😯 No partner yet for LAMM!!! Jon, Ian, Sarah, Anna – surely one of you crazy runner dudes can step up to the challenge?

  2. This report contains an orange T-shirt; was that issued by the site manager ❓ The report does not contain any mention of tent poles… :zip:

  3. No, apparently he borrowed another tent. I thought he had a tent of his own, but I guess the component pieces are evenly distributed throughout his house.

We’re off caving in the Mendips this weekend, Richard is buying a new camera box, so hopefully we will have caving piccy’s for you all to look forward to.

  4. For all you climbers, we saw some nice looking climbing routes in Porthgain as well (provided the waves aren’t too big): big inclined slate slabs dropping into the sea. Surprisingly, we didn’t see anyone on them on a sunny saturday early evening.
