Sunshine, sea, palm trees, and enormous limestone walls waiting for you to climb them … I couldn’t imagine any better way to spend the week after Christmas! This time the location was a bit further South from Paklenica on the Dalmatian coastline, a small holiday village called Omis near Split. This is the place where the river Cetina flows into the Adriatic sea, surrounded by beautiful cliffs. It’s also a popular rafting and canyoning place. There are several superb climbing areas in the neighbourhood, one of them – Planovo – right in the center of the village!
Plenty of single pitch sports routes there and a few multi-pitch routes as well. The parking lot is just under the wall, one could even belay right from the car.
While we heard reports of heavy snowfalls and temperatures around minus15-20 C in Hungary, we climbed mostly in T-shirt and enjoyed almost the same temperatures but above zero! We did not miss a day of climbing during the 6 days we stayed there, the rain arrived just as we were leaving.
The most wonderful place we visited was Brela, another small seaside village just about 25 km from Omis. There are plenty of multi-pitch routes here (in every difficulty, ranging from 2 to 5 pitches) , and there is a fabulous view of the sea and the nearby isle of Brac all the way as you climb!!! Naturally we spent much more time than usual on the top.
There is a 5 pitch route along the ridge in the front right and the other routes are on the wall underneath.
In Marjan (a climbing area just outside Split) you have to be careful not to sit (or grip) onto a cactus!!!
This time I saw quite a few cats as well, I liked this one the most. I took this picture for Terry.

Yeah, I’ve got 2004 edition ‘Croatia climbing guide’ and even that’s 400 pages. You can buy it in Needlesports. And Paklenica is yet another guide on its own. There’s loads of stuff in Croatia :yum:

There’s a 2009 edition as well here There are some new routes, we climbed some of them in Brela.
Yes, the offer is still valid, any time you feel the urge to visit. (However, it’s wise to avoid the summer months)
