Ski ski ski

Since our last post, we’ve been skiing every day!

On Wednesday, we skied at Jafferau, a mountain on the other side of the valley from where we skied the previous few days. The slopes on this mountain are at a higher altitude and therefore much colder than the slopes on the other side of the valley. Because of the mountain’s exposed summit and bad visibility earlier in the week, the slopes had been closed and so Richard was keen to seek out the pristine powder snow. Most of the area had been pisted however, but Richard had fun on an unpisted red run. Jafferau kept us occupied for the day, but we’d skied everything about 5 times or more by the end of the day.

We needed a challenge, so on Thursday we decided to try and ski every piste on the mountain (not the Jafferau side, the other side), including all the cut-throughs etc… The aim was to create our own piste map with the GPS. We very nearly succeeded and would have done so, if we hadn’t stopped to chat to the holiday rep, in which time, the last lift that we needed closed! Still, we had a great day, which included two black runs and over 60 km of travel and 5985 m of descent.

Friday was a more relaxed day, we skied to our favourite mountain cafe in the morning and then after more skiing and lunch, we met up with a chap from our hotel. He’d been in ski school all week and so hadn’t seen half of the resort. We took him to areas he hadn’t previously been and Richard helped him with his technique -this is something Richard can now add to his cv, having now decided that I have improved sufficiently to be called competent. Those red runs at Chamonix would be simple now!

It’s still snowing. It’s incredible that the transport system copes so well here… It runs as if there was no snow at all!
