Two days of glorious sun: Gouther and High Crag

Oooh what a treat. The whole weekend was going to be hot and sunny.

But climbers are fickle. There was the potential for it to be too hot, and the wind was a bit blowy, so where should we go? Not too high, not too low, not too shady, not too sunny, and not too far away.

We decided on Gouther. Easy to avoid the masses heading for the fells, and likely to be fairly quiet.

By the time we got there, there were already two parties. Both doing routes I’d not seen climbed before. One party was on Hindleg Crack in the corner, and another was going up an E2 called Dog on the Edge just to the left of Kennel Wall. That left Bloodhound free, so of course we had to do it. It’s a fantastic slab, with just enough holds in just enough places, but extremely run out.

By the time we’d finished, the crag was getting busy with 4 more parties arriving. That is very busy for such a small crag so we just squeezed in a couple more routes: Kennel Wall and Dog on the Edge.

On Sunday we thought we’d catch up with Richard and Chris. It was less windy so going up high would be a good idea, so we went to High Crag in Buttermere.

It was a brutal walk up in the heat, but definitely worth it. Keith and Fiona were also there, so we all tackled two fantastic routes up another lovely slab: Sampson and Dry Trim. And then another classic, Delilah.

The walk back down to the car was much easier, and we were very, very happy to find the ice cream van waiting for us.

And then we went home for tea, and…..

  1. Looks like a fantastic weekend! :star: Could you please send a bit of warmth and sunshine to Romania? It’s been gloomy and rainy for more than 3 weeks now, I’m starting to get sick of it … Probably my company should have sent me to England! Oh, and if there is a bit of room left in the package (next to the sunshine and the warmth) please send a piece of these yummy looking mini cakes too!!! :yum:
