Wintry Walks

It seems like it has been raining enough recently to enable Noah to prepare for a perfect maiden journey. However, the weekend was set to be rain free. Hooray! Despite the lack of rain it was also going be quite cold; too cold for rock climbing but not cold enough for ice. So our options were mountain biking, going to the indoor wall, or some winter mountain walking. The indoor climbing wall was quickly ruled out – how could we go indoors when it was sunny outside! And walking won out over mountain biking as we quickly decided that our general mountain fitness needed work…

Fleetwith Pike, Buttermere

Saturday’s venue, Fleetwith Pike, was selected to give us a chance to collect another Lakeland Letterbox.

The Priest’s Hole, Dove Crag

We weren’t sure Sunday would be dry but when we drew back the curtains it was thankfully still rain free. We quickly selected another destination, Dove Crag from Patterdale. However, we needed to be quick about our plans to avoid the rain that was now forecast to arrive at around 3pm. Yet as we left the car at Brotherswater Laetitia exclaimed that she’d forgotten her waterproof jacket – a little more impetus on us to get round our route before the rain returned.

We tarried a while in the Priest’s Hole on Dove Crag – it was nice to be out of the bitterly cold wind, and the views out of the cave were beautiful.

Descending along Hartsop ridge towards Patterdale, given our relatively low levels of activity over the past months, we felt reasonably happy with our performance over two days of hiking. 🙂
