Grands Montets Powder

It’s become a bit of a tradition to take the first week of February as a skiing trip; it offers two fantastic things, usually some of the best snow conditions, and the week incorporates my birthday. Why not? I pay pay for the queen to have a holiday on her birthday every year, why shouldn’t I have one too? (Oh, and it adds special spice to the après ski enjoyment! 😛 )

The weather has been quite unsettled, but that has meant quite a lot of the fluffy white stuff! 😀
So far we’ve been enjoying the back side off-piste action at Le Tour, Les Houches, Le Brevent, and Les Grands Montets areas.

Our day at Le Brevent started late. We’d all already been to the top of the Midi with the intention of skiing the Vallée Blanche. However, as we passed through the middle station on the way up we noticed that the cabins coming back down were disgorging skiers coming back down. Weird. Then pretty much as we arrived at the top an announcement sounded, “due to deteriorating weather please return to Chamonix as quickly as possible”. We ventured out to peer down the snow arête that leads to the start of the VB and wow it was wild out there!

Despite the failed VB plans we had fun at Brevent and then got a little merry afterwards drinking “Desperados” (a beer/tequila mix). Here’s a shot of Phil, Dave, Jon, Pete, Laetitia, Rebecca, Mathias, and Steve. Dawn took the photo, and Trev and Jax joined us moments later too! Leaving only Richard, he’d gone down a little earlier to rest his legs from the constant powder bashing.

The next day, Tuesday, it snowed heavily all day and visibility was terrible. But, the powder was amazing – waist deep and loaded with champagne – hero skiing conditions…
