Powder, powder and more powder

There’s more snow here than a very snowy place, and it’s fantastic.

Yesterday, due to the very heavy precipitation, we decided to go to Les Houches. This is a good place for a first day out to get the ski legs back in to action, and an excellent choice when it’s snowing heavily as you can ski through the trees and have tons of fun.

The added bonus was that we could meet up with the family Roberts.

Baz, Pete and I carried on skiing until my legs were destroyed, and then we got the bus back ( a very rare experience for Baz so we had to get photographic evidence), and headed straight to the Vagabonds for beer and crisps (small mortgage required prior to Happy Hour!).

Despite contracting ‘man flu’ from Pete, I was determined to get another good day of skiing in today. The muscles in my legs were a bit tired but I thought that there was no way I was going to wimp out and sleep off the cold. The forecast was for heavy snow again, and with strong winds up high, so we decided we would have an adventure on the Magic Forest of Les Grands Montets.

Always thankful of the super slick new Plan Joran tele cabin, we were on the snow fairly quickly. We had a little play on the slopes to warm up the legs and then headed towards the Magic Forest.

When in the Magic Forest, you can veer right to reach the Retour Pendent lift, or veer left to reach the Marmottons lift, or you can accidentally miss both and find yourself in an awesome gully all the way down to the valley.

What a blast, it was fantastic! Super deep powder, initially starting steep, but easing off about half way down. My tired legs struggled and I couldn’t react as quickly as I needed to, but it was still great fun.

We came out onto the road just by the indoor tennis courts, conveniently only 50m from a bus stop.

We decided we had more energy so we took a bus back to Les Grand Montets and headed up in the lift for more powder fun. However, when I got back on the slopes my skiing had really gone to pants, I was far more tired than I liked. We stopped for lunch and the sun came out – the strong winds had blown the clouds and snow away. After lunch we took in a couple lines in the powder but the the lifts were beginning to close due to the wind and my legs were knackered, so we skied down to the valley, on the piste this time, and went home for coffee and biscuits.
