Great North Swim 2016 and Ingleborough

With no training and only a couple of quick dips in the water this year I made the crazy decision to enter the Great North Swim again.

Maybe it’s not so crazy. It is a long way, but it’s not a distance I’m worried about, and I knew I’d get round, eventually.

The weather was forecasted to be a bit dodgy, with scattered rain showers, but I was going to be in the lake anyway so a little rain wasn’t going to trouble me. Luckily, during my swim the rain held off so Pete didn’t get wet as well.

I found the first half mile very slow going, and it felt like everyone was overtaking me, but I kept going, and as usual the second half seemed easier. I was warmed up by then, but I was getting tired.

My time was a bit slower than last year, 40 minutes 11 seconds, which I’m not very happy about, so I have decided to enter the Great Scottish Swim to see if I can improve on this with some training (heaven forbid!!).

On Sunday Pete was taking a group down Alum Pot, so I decided to go for a walk to the top of Ingleborough with Zac.

I’ve been under Ingelborough plenty of times, in many of the caves, but I’d never been inclined to continue to the top in wellies and caving suit. Today the weather looked like it might stay dry and I might get a view, so off we went.

I had a map, but I didn’t need it, the route is very clear.

It was quite hot going up and Zac was enjoying finding the muddy puddles to cool off in.

There were quite a few people on the summit, but the summit is pretty massive so there was plenty of space for everyone.

I went down the way I went up and made it back to the car about 15 minutes before Pete. Not bad timing. I was quite tired by then, and I was very glad that I didn’t have the other two peaks of the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks round to tackle on this day.
