Panoramic Route

After our amazing safari experience the final part of our South African adventure was to take in the Panoramic Route on our way back to Johannesburg…

And the final part of the adventure…

Laetitia had left her phone, purse, etc. in our hire car at Cape Town airport when we had departed for Johannesburg. We called the hire car company and miraculously they said the items had been handed in. But they thought the cash had been taken from the purse. They said we could collect them from their desk at Johannesburg airport when we left to go home to the UK in a weeks time, but we had to arrange for a courier to collect them from Cape Town International Airport. We tried in vain to organise that. Organising a courier in South Africa isn’t as easy as Europe! Who knew. Then, I had the obvious brain wave – I know a guy who lives in Johannesburg, my climbing partner from the South African international climbing meet I’d been on in 2008, Neil. After a quick Messenger exchange and a telephone call later and Neil had taken control, he would get the phone couriered to his work address and we could meet for coffee in Johannesburg before flying home. It worked a treat. Thanks Neil!!! 🙂

I wished I had taken a photo of us having breakfast together when we met, collected the phone, and shared stories. 🙁

Anyway, not only was the phone, purse, charging lead, etc. all exactly as we’d left it, the cash was all still present and correct in the purse. Amazing. Exceeded my expectations. Does South Africa still deserve its notoriety for crime? Are all those razor wire fences still needed? I don’t know. But it was great to get our stuff back. And it shows how valuable friends are! 🙂

  1. Boer war, not Boar!! Amazing stroke of luck to know someone who could courier the stuff back to you. I expect you bought him a large beer too!

    1. Thanks, I think that was a predictive text auto correction gone wrong. 😉
Yeah, it’s good to have contacts! No beer though, just a hearty breakfast, it was only 9am.
