An Evening at Sandale

With the temperature at last rising, we decided to get the weekend off to a good start by heading for Headend Quarry, just a few minutes away. It is limestone, very polished and quite short, but enough for a few hours of fun.
The views, north to the Solway and south to the Northern fells are breathtaking.
Andy and Sabiene had never abseiled before, so it was a good place to practice, and they both had a go at leading, a first for Sabiene.
Check out these pics……….

Sarah polished off the HVS, but found the E1 a little harder. It gave Andy a good lesson in keeping your wits about you when belaying….. or maybe wear a cricket box. He was still smarting 30 minutes later in the pub…

Here’s Andy’s near miss…….

Here’s a late evening view from the crag…..

  1. Ah, you need to reduce the quality of the video. Full size video files are massive and are no good for web sites, they take ages to download for people to watch, you need to scale keeping the file to a few Mb. Use the ‘share’ or ‘export’ options in Quicktime Pro or some other video software you may have (Google for free stuff)…

  2. I discovered Head End/Sandale Quarry completely by accident while out on a walk from Ireby last weekend. I was chatting to a family climbing there who, when I showed an interest and told them I’d just started climbing outdoors on limestone, asked if I’d brought climbing shoes. Unfortunately I hadn’t but otherwise, they were going to let me have a go at one of the climbs they were doing. I’d have loved to have had a go. I’m now looking to try to find a club in the area who do climb there so I can join. I could see there were some superb little climbs on it anyway…
