Smardale is a nature reserve along the old Darlington to Tebay railway line.

It’s a really peaceful place to walk. In the past I’ve seen red squirrels here, deer, woodpeckers and evidence of badgers.

I was in luck today and saw a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, but VERY upset to see a grey squirrel.

Autumn is coming and is turning the leaves a fine array of colours.

The viaduct is one of several that have been restored along the line. It is a fine piece of engineering.
