I met up with Liz for a quick trip to Newcastleton – one of the 7 Stanes.
It’s a quiet place – unlike the popular sites in the Lake District and well worth a visit. They have a short green, two blue runs, a red and a black to go at. We mixed a red and a blue and had a great couple of hours in the saddle.
Pippa came too and enjoyed it as much as we did, finished off with tea and cake on a picnic bench in the carpark.

The only downer being the poor signposting on the trails and the lack of cafe at the car-park.

I thought you might like this so have added it.

Nice picture through the centre of the stone sculpture!
We have been to one of the 7 Stanes… I can’t remember which one though, just that it was the most southerly site, is that this one?
The 7 Staines routes are really good and, unbelievably, FREE!!
You might think that Newcastleton is the most southerly but if you go here 7 stanes locations you can see which one you went to.
Yep, it was Newcastleton then – maybe not the most southerly if we are gonna be pedantic, but certainly the closest…
Anyway, what do you mean “quiet … unlike … the Lake District”? We’ve done the North Face Trail loads and have hardly ever seen anyone else…
I didn’t mean to be pedantic, but you may have been talking about one of the others in Dumfries and Galloway. Anyway, if you fancy a trip to another of the 7 Stanes just let me know.
I’ve added a picture of Pippa which I thought might raise a smile.
Now that you’ve added the one of Pippa, and we can see what is behind the stone, it looks like some fun Photoshop trickery!
You have seen what’s behind the stone. The first picture you may note is in, I presume, Border tongue and is one side, and the last picture is in good old (modern) English of the other side. There was no photoshopping going on at all. I just held Pippa up to the hole and Liz ‘snapped’ her picture.
