As the forecast was good, I thought it would be a shame to sit at home and chop wood.

Arriving at the Old Dungeon Ghyll just after 8.30, the sun was beating down. It was cold and I expected a little snow and ice on the summits. I was feeling a little bit unsure about how much ice there was as I’d not taken my axe and crampons. As it was, it turned out ok – just. But it could have been a lot worse.

We made good time along Mickleden and headed up to Angle Tarn before taking a turn to the right to visit Rossett Pike, which gave some excellent views back down Mickelden as well as views of some of the remaining Wainwrights.

We continued on to Esk Hause and made a slight detour to visit Allen Crags which wasn’t too far off our route, which is a nice spot giving fine views around.

It was then a bit of a descent to Sprinkling Tarn and Seathwaite Fell which would be a nice spot to Wild Camp.

And then it was back uphill to Esk Hause for an ascent of Great End, over some very icy patches on the summit.

We got some excellent views to places we’d been recently.

And finally we bobbed up to Esk Pike before returning back home to take Morgan to the vets.
