On our way back from Le Praz de Lys we stopped for a day in Chamonix to visit Pete and Tish. I could certainly see the appeal of their apartment, with the glacier out the window! After some debate we decided to spend the afternoon skiing, but unfortunately picked the busiest day Pete had ever seen. Between a great deal of queueing, we made use of Pete’s vast knowledge of the local mountains to drag Rachel down a couple of runs that were a bit too hard for her. Despite that, she was seen with a smile on her face, and the rest of us managed to enjoy ourselves as well. Pete took me on a superb long black run from the top of the mountain a couple of times, and Tish found Rachel a rather less stressful place to ski.
The wait for the telecabine back down took an astonishing 90 minutes as the queue inched slowly forward, but our spirits were soon restored by Pete and Tish’s hospitality, plus pizza for dinner.
The next day saw us on the—rather snowy—road back to the UK via Burgundy and Orleans. We’re spending New Year’s Eve in the somewhat dull town of Dreux, and catch the ferry back tomorrow evening.
Happy New Year, everyone, and thanks again, Pete and Tish, for putting us up!
