Germany is one of the world’s leading economies but not one of the world’s foremost travel destinations – probably because of the climate and lack of beaches. In this article we hope to make some progress towards rectifying that Germany is a country full of beauty, delights and cultural treasures. There really is so much to do in here and you’ll want to come again and again after your first time – so we’d recommend some annual travel insurance for multiple trips. It’s cheap to get Germany and not too expensive to travel or stay in hotels so there’s no real excuse not to visit.

Ok so starting off we should look at the culture. Whilst this is not always a huge high point of European travel destinations with Germany it’s somewhat different. Firstly the food is absolutely brilliant – providing of course you like sausage and deep fried things, the beer is amongst the best the world has to offer and the beer halls are a lively drum of activity very different from our own pubs and nowhere even close to the gastro pubs that now seem to be on every corner. Finally the friendliness of the nationals is unlike anything in any other European country as the people are friendly warm and inviting.
Onto the physical highlights, we have to start with the capital Berlin. Berlin is an intriguing city with a whole host of top tourist treats; most notably the Brandenburg Gate where you can visit the remains of the Berlin Wall and the Reichstag with its impressive roof and hive of activity. Visiting some of the many war museums and the national museums are an absolute must as you can explore the history of East and West Germany and the impact of two world wars on the country. Aside from this the city is a hive of activity with the finest electronic music scene anywhere outside of Ibiza.

Next we have Neuschwanstein in Bavaria. Nestled in the alps Neuschwanstein is perhaps the most impressive castle in the world and looks like it has been lifted straight from a fairy tale. The castle was built in 1869 by Ludwig the second and is incredibly grand full of what we now think of as kitsch quirkiness.
From here we head to Weimar one of Germany’s finest cities and the heart of German cultural identity. The city has played home to the finest intellectuals Germany has ever seen including Bach, Nietzsche, Wagner and Kandinsky. This means it has some of the finest collections of art and music in the world and some truly inspiring architecture.
In another city, Cologne, we can find some of the greatest architecture in Germany and the most impressive cathedral anywhere in Eastern Europe. What makes the cathedral so impressive is the fact that it is the only building to have survived the extensive bombing campaign that the city faced during world war two giving it a significant wow factor that you are unlikely to find elsewhere. The city has a great modern life and a thriving arts culture so is well worth a few days visit.
We’ve barely scratched the surface of all that Germany has to offer but we’re going to end finally with the Black Forest. The Black Forest stretches from Baden Baden to the border of Switzerland and is unimaginably beautiful. This is a great place to walk and to camp and the area is littered with small towns set in tranquil forests along the beautiful rivers. Baden Baden itself is excellent but our favourite has to be Freiburg which is a university town with a thriving night life, beautiful streets with water running through them and a gorgeous clock tower. A weeks camping in the area is alone worth a trip to Germany, so off you go and have fun.

I’ve never heard Cologne described as being in Eastern Europe before!
