Barrow Door Letterboxing

Saturday’s weather was forecast to be the least disappointing, so Laetitia and I opted to reserve Sunday for a trip to Kendal Wall and use the lack of rain as motivation to go for a walk. Unfortunately I find walking only a little less dull than running. And that’s only because of the lack of knee-pain caused by running. The answer was to introduce one of our regular walking related objectives; finding one of the many Lakeland Letterboxes to spice up the interest…

We did eventually find the letterbox we were looking for after much searching around. 🙂 Some letterboxes are very tricky to find, if not for the complex clues, for the vagaries of trying to use precise bearings on features many kilometres away. Just a minuscule error in the sighting of a bearing on a feature several kilometres away can put you many, maybe hundreds, of metres away from your target. 🙁

While we were on route to the target letterbox we bumped in to Sarah and couple of her pals out for a day in the fells. 😀 They looked like they were out for a run (fancy fell running shoes and stuff) but as it turned out they agreed with my view on running, it’s bad for your knees. 😳

Anyway, here’s a couple of shots and the mandatory evidence of letterbox success, Spike the hedgehog…

  1. Fantastic site and blog. Well done! I am a Dartmoor Letterboxer, but am planning to be in the Lake District next week. I would love to find a letterbox (or 2!) up there. I’ve tried and failed in the past to find them in Cumbria. Any tips? Where do you get your clues? Email me if you’d prefer!
