Esk Gorge Scramble

Pete was working this Sunday so I thought I’d join him.

The venue was Esk Gorge, and the idea is to scramble up the river and to jump off as many high points as possible. What a laugh!

Pete was guiding 7 people, most of whom had never done anything like this before. They were kitted out with Joe’s gear – wet suit, buoyancy aid and helmet. I borrowed a helmet and used my own wet suit.

We headed off from the parking area for a 30 – 45 minute walk to the start of the scramble.

There was already a family there enjoying the jumps and I felt a little over dressed. However I was gad of all the kit when we made our first jump. The water was fresh, despite it being late summer.

The first jump was small, just a taster. The second jump was a bit bigger, maybe 10m. I was a bit nervous on that one, but decided the best option was to just not think about it. It was really exhilarating.

We continued up the gorge, having fun struggling against the flow of water, until we got to the penultimate jump…

… The penultimate jump is about 15m maybe? That does’t sound very high, but it’s scary enough taking that leap.

It was a great day out, a real laugh. Combining scrambling and water is an almost perfect combination.
