I’ve thought about a climbing adventure to Thailand for years, but I’ve always been a bit nervous about taking the trip. I’d heard it was hot, hard, and getting more and more touristy, but I’d also heard it’s amazing, beautiful, and the Thai people are lovely … “the land of a thousand smiles”.
Along with Rachel and Richard and some friends from England I headed for Newtonmore in the Cairngorms for a week’s holiday over New Year. The forecasts were looking pretty dire, but we never let that dampen our enthusiasm! So my friend Amy and I set our alarms for early on Sunday morning, the first day …
… with a very quiet bit in the middle. This year we had the whole family around.
With the fantastic freezing conditions in the Lakes currently, as well as allowing for some surprising Lakeland skiing, there was also an opportunity for a super fast solo ascent of Central Gully on Great End…
We might have been in the south of Spain, and it might have been sunny, but it was really, really cold.
So after our epic adventures on Rijm Assaf we needed an easier day, so Amy and I headed for the South Ridge of Jebel Mayeen whilst Carol and Ian went off to climb Jack Daniels (a 6 pitch VS) on the East Face.
Wadi Rum is an extraordinary place…
We decided to escape the horrible November weather and have a week bolt clipping in El Chorro.
What an absolutely glorious Autumn day we had today. The beautiful colours where glowing in the sunshine. Thank goodness we had no reason to not go out.
