Climbing rock (aka Free Climbing).
We had planned to go to Skye for the Spring Bank holiday, but Pete was still recovering from a bad cold and we didn’t feel up for the journey. Instead, the forecast was good for the Lakes, so we decided to stay at home.
After more than six months break - and a bit of back and waist problems in the meantime - I finally managed to get out on rock again! Could I have picked a more scenic location for the big occasion than Dürnstein in Niederosterreich? Well, probably yes, but certainly not as close to Budapest! Dürnstein is ca. 80 kms from Vienna, it's an old little village lying at the Danube, with impressive rock towers and a castle ruin which was built around the rocks.
As Ian’s post shows, Monday’s weather dawned very disappointingly! The wall-to-wall sunshine promised by the weather forecasters just wasn’t to be seen. We procrastinated for a couple of hours knowing that early starts are unwise for rock climbing at this time of year, thus allowing the rock to warm up.
Oops, I nearly forgot the fact that thanks to Richard making his regular visits to all the shops he looks after for Cordee in the Lakes, he and I grabbed a couple of routes after work on Monday evening at Raven Crag Walthwaite in Langdale…
The sun was shining but it was still a bit cool, so we had a short day on the beautiful rock at Castle Rock of Triermain.
I’ve thought about a climbing adventure to Thailand for years, but I’ve always been a bit nervous about taking the trip. I’d heard it was hot, hard, and getting more and more touristy, but I’d also heard it’s amazing, beautiful, and the Thai people are lovely … “the land of a thousand smiles”.
We might have been in the south of Spain, and it might have been sunny, but it was really, really cold.
So after our epic adventures on Rijm Assaf we needed an easier day, so Amy and I headed for the South Ridge of Jebel Mayeen whilst Carol and Ian went off to climb Jack Daniels (a 6 pitch VS) on the East Face.
Wadi Rum is an extraordinary place…
