Dave finally got his second trip and training session in one of the RAF Sea King helicopters. It had taken 7 attempts to get a RAF helicopter to the Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team’s base. The previous attempts were cancelled due to operational demands on the helicopters.
This helicopter came from RAF Leconsfield with a great crew. They showed us around, went through all the operating procedures we need to know about and spent some time getting young search and rescue dog ‘Flash’ used to the size and noise of the big yellow taxi. Check out www.sardalakes.org.uk for more on search and rescue dogs in the Lake District.
We flew to the nine standards for a photo opportunity and to be familiar with loading and unloading of personnel on the hill.

The crew wanted some winching practice so a quick flight up Mallerstang to Aisgill to set up a rope, where one of our team members became a crag fast casualty.
A swift winching rescue and off they flew to re-fuel at Blackpool.
See you next year boys…
