9 hours of Saturday was spent in a racing yacht, taking part in the Round the Island Race; one of the most famous yachting races in the world, around the Isle of Wight. Having never been in a sailing yacht before, this was an experience. There were 1700 boats involved and the start and finish lines were rather scary with boats tacking and jiving everywhere for positions.
The boat had 8 members of crew and it was quite amazing how we almost always had something to be doing. Thankfully I didn’t feel at all seasick and the weather was generally good, except for rain towards the end of the day.
Definitely something to be repeated!

It was quite something! We finished in the first 20%, our skipper said that it was respectable for a crew which weren’t used to working together (or knew what they were doing!)

Something like that yes.
The guy who owns the yacht works at the University (http://freespace.virgin.net/russell.beale/) and I know him through Richard. It’s run as a pretty laid back business I guess, but he does that just to help finance the boat, as obviously, it’s pretty expensive (when sails cost £15000!). He does take anyone out I think if you fancied it.
