Paul and I thought we’d get up to Raven Crag Thirlmere to tick off Totalitarian. But… As we approached the crag a peregrine falcon started screeching so loudly we could hardly hear ourselves think! No kidding – this bird meant business!
We’d approached the crag without using the standard forestry track route, which meant we had missed the sign saving us the walk, the sign that said climbing was banned due to nesting peregrines. Doh!

Does the forestry track start at a pay and display car park?
I walked all the way up there one year. There was no warning sign at the start of the track but one at the upper fence only, meaning you had to walk nearly all the way up before you saw it

Colin; no, we weren’t being tight with our car parking fees, we just went the wrong way!
Terry; the sign is at the top of the forestry track – so before the steep upper section of the approach, but still a long way from the turn off the road.
At one point, as Paul and I debated what to do – retreat or throw stones
– I thought the peregrine was gonna start dive bombing us as it swooped around in all directions over head screeching it’s little lungs out!
Yeah, they can be nasty birds
There was one nesting in Cornflake Gorge for ages, so you couldn’t climb there 
Not only that, but it used to eat all the rare chicks at ‘rare breeds farm’ 
Then, Foot and Mouth got the rest of those nice animals
