A bit of a preparation is probably a good idea before starting a long adventure like the Haute Route. In our case it was essential! After setting up a belay in the snow (Anna & Ian above), our first attempt a creating a ‘z’ pulley system to practice our crevasse rescue was a disaster. In a real situiation our team member stuck down the crevasse (Laetita) would certainly have frozen to death before we’d got them out…
We also spent a bit of time playing with buried avalanche transceivers. This was more successful – we found it every time.
Of course we also did some skiing to losen up the legs before the route proper.
