Williamson’s Monument (Not)

We’ve lived in the Kentmere valley for years and have never walked up to the interestingly named Williamson’s Monument…

Today (after a morning of yet more rain and some essential gardening chores) we (Dave E, Laetitia and Pete) took the opportunity to walk up to the “monument”. The skyline view of the cairn on the westerly side of the valley as one drives up or down the Kentmere road is impressive; the “monument” itself isn’t! 🙁 Or so we thought. The thing is (with the benefit of hindsight), we were without a map and had no proper idea of where we were going, so I’m fairly sure we went to the wrong place. Ah well, an opportunity for the next wet day, which with this year’s weather shouldn’t be too long to wait!

For reference, the monument is ‘In Memory of THOMAS WILLIAMSON (Feb 13th 1797) aged 66 years. Erected 1803’.

But it was a good afternoon walk to ready ourselves for Laetitia’s hearty Sunday dinner! Alas, there was no Colin and Dave H for dinner as planned, they had long journey’s back down south, competing with the last of the school kids before the new term starts after their long summer holidays.
