Church Beck

Yesterday was fun… I don’t often post about work, who wants to read anything about work, that’s boring! But yesterday was particularly good fun taking an extended family and some of their friends up Church Beck in Coniston. The water levels and temperatures were just right, perfect fun for a dampish day in the Lakes!

However, of interest and the reason I thought I would post something about the day, is that it was interesting to notice just how much the water level dropped in just over 3 hours from morning to afternoon. The level dropped about 12cm. It’s amazing just how quickly mountain streams respond to rain, both flooding and draining. Last year I got washed away in flood conditions in Esk Gorge – I was swept down and over three waterfalls before I got control and escaped from the water – it was lucky I did as the next fall was a big one and would almost unquestionably have smashed me to bits! Yesterday, certainly on the second trip up the gorge, there was a much reduced flow. Of course that doesn’t affect the pools that enable the big jumps etc. as these pools are naturally dammed and seem to stay pretty much the same in any water state.

Anyway, on a different note, if you have arrived here from a Google search or something like that and want someone to take you up Church Beck Ghyll safely then give me a shout using the feedback from…
