• Pete on the Seneca Rocks ridge after a hike on our damp first day

  • Laetitia on the Seneca Rocks ridge - vertical drops on both sides!

  • It seems that the whole region was heavily impacted by the American cicvil war, there were historic battle ground sites all over the place...

  • The famous view of Seneca Rocks - the line of Ecstasy (3 pitches) is skyline of the lowest near vertical buttress bottom right, so the whole formation can give five or six pitches bottom to top... :-)

Seneca Rocks

Our first venue was the spectacular Seneca Rocks. Only just over two hours drive from Washington, and what a place…

Predominately a traditional climbing venue, but there are quite a few sport routes too. Our only problem was that the guidebook is currently out of print, so we had to make do with what we could find online. Not that much of a problem as we only had two days at Seneca before heading off.

It was nice to get away from the extortionate food prices of Washington too. Our first meal, in Petersburg, was a typical American country diner – everyone knew everyone, everything was fried, everything was covered in cheese, and everything was super tasty! 🙂

Then we got to Seneca Rocks…

Series - Washington

  1. Washington DC
  2. Seneca Rocks
  3. New River Gorge
