Grotto Falls ice climb in the Canadian Rockies

Ice climbing Grotto Falls with Canmore friends, Doug Nelson, Everett Fee and Terry Kenny (UK). Throughout the year this spectacular grotto is visited by many for the pictographs and for the unique topography. I had the good fortune to climb with these three seasoned ice climbers during mid January in ideal conditions.

  1. What Tibor didn’t relate was the first part of our day – real Rockies bush whacking, only through deep snow too, through (to me) treacherous territory at the bottom of mCGilervray slabs. unfortunately, Water Hole climb, which we were looking for, hadn’t touched down though it looked like it might have from the road.
Tish has rock climbed there with me in summer. A different scene now though :freeze:

    1. Your right Terry that first outing while searching for ice to climb was definitely super sketch as we nimbly crossed along the steep slopes. Still, finding the cave that government dug to store secret documents during the Cold War and later stumbling upon the Canada Trail, did make for a rather unique adventure. Here is a brief video capturing some of our adventure…

  2. Nice post,Tibor, we love your videos.
You’ll have to come back in summer and video the rock climb that goes about 60m right of the cave. Think its called, ‘Morning Glory’, (not that I’d know anything about that) 😆
