With fantastic weather on Saturday, Ian, Anna, Andy, Sabiene and Paul headed over the Solway to the Galloway Hills to meet John and his wife for a long trog up and over Benyellary and Merrick (841m). What a fantastic place! Quiet and unspoilt, probably what the Lakes was like 50 years ago!
The descent was more arduous than the ascent… huge clumps and tufts of grass. By the time we reached the car we were ready for a pint in Newton Stewart.
Oh, and its called the Awful Hand because the ridges look like 4 fingers and a thumb, as you can see from my picture!

FYI: John’s partner is Annette. Not to forget Muffin the entertaining poodle who always accompanies them.
Why is this called “The Awful Hand”?
Oh my…. what a body….
Are the ridges you refer to for ‘The Awful Hand’ the finely tuned muscles, or something else…?
CALM DOWN LAETITIA!! SEE NEW PHOTO ON SITE, TAKEN FROM A FAR OFF HILL…..
Hmm, I still don’t get that.
I can see the new picture of the hand, but what are you saying? That the island (or hill) in the main picture in some way looks like a hand?
when you are up there, or more accurately, when you look at a map, the configuration of the ridges looks (a bit) like a hand with thumb & fingers…. well with some imagination…. maybe….
Ah, now it finally makes sense! Looked up NX414839 (grid ref for Benyellary) on Multimap, and I could just about see the shape with five “fingers”…
