Our second trip to Tromso … this year we went with our friends from Slovakia (previously Langdale), Ed & Jana. And the weather was very different! As soon as we landed in Tromso we knew it was different – it was super sunny, spring-like, and the snow cover was broken to around 150m to 200m above sea level. There was likely to be some walking carrying skis at the start of each day…
We had four days of this beautiful sunny weather. The snow was spring-like, even a bit slushy lower down. But the views were amazing!

Who’d have thought the weather would have been sunny enough for Laetitia and Jana to go skinny dipping?! Well, it wasn’t really, the water was bloody freezing – they were in for about five seconds before they came running out! 🙂

When the weather turned it was sleet, almost rain, at sea level. So we opted for some Tromso city based entertainment – first bouldering, and second a sauna complete with several dips in the fjord!

Back on the skis … the rain hadn’t helped with the snow cover. In fact it had swollen the streams! I ended up knee deep in the water at one point! This was the end of my day, with frozen soaked feet in my ski boots I turned round and went back to the car. Laetitia accompanied me while Ed & Jana went on for a couple more hours before also turning around at the first rise in the picture below…

Our final ski day was on Straumsaksla. The weather was brutal. High winds, driven wet sleet low down, and frozen hard sleet come ice at mid level. Ed & I went on a fair bit higher than the point where Laetitia stopped, the picture below, but not long after we too were stopped by the ice covered slopes and fierce winds.

A night out in Tromoso before our flight home…
It snowed heavily all night, so much so that when our taxi arrived to take us to the airport at 6am there was half a metre of powder at sea level. Whoever went skiing the week after we were there this year probably had some brilliant powder… 🙂
