To celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary we’d arranged a very special stay at a very special hotel in Galloway. But before that we were slumming it in normal climber’s fashion and enjoying a bit of rock climbing on the fabulous sea cliffs around the Rhins of Galloway.
Meikle Ross
Our first climbing stop was Meikle Ross. The whole coastline drive was amazing, we stopped at Dhoon Beach first for a leg-stretch and dog walk. What a beautiful place! Later, after circling Ross Bay we found the Meikle Ross crags. Another amazing place with the tiny island of Little Ross just off the mainland and way beyond, across the Solway, were the Lakeland mountains. 🙂
Considering what a brilliant location it was, we had the place totally to ourselves. Something I think is probably normal in these parts…
Crammag Head
Our second venue was Crammag Head. Crammag Head is actually comprised of many complex craglets, zawns, and walls. It’s a very beautiful place! However, being that it is perhaps the premier sea-cliff climbing venue in Galloway we did not have this area to ourselves … there was one other team (albeit a threesome) climbing there that day. These Galloway crags are quiet. 🙂
Glenapp Castle
After all that great climbing it was time for the main event, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. For this milestone we’d booked a night and dinner etc. at an extremely special venue, Glenapp Castle. This is without doubt exactly what you might think of when you imagine staying at a luxury Scottish castle! It was awesome!! Awesome is perhaps an overused words these days, but in this case it is, if anything, an understatement of just how incredible an experience (privilege?) it is to stay here…
